Next troubleshooting steps for WMI-based service monitoring

Orion Platform 2013.1.0, NPM 10.5,

I'm trying to monitor/alert on Windows service up/down for specific services. On a given node, I went into the "Service Control Manager" util from that node's Node Details page and selected "Start Monitoring This Service" for the desired service.  After creating the Application Monitor and Component Monitor, it never gets past the "Initial Poll In Progress" status and never appears among the choices for alerting in the Alert Manager.

I've verified that the credential in use is valid and has admin permissions on the target server.  I've verified that WMI is setup correctly and that there are no firewalls (Windows FW or any network FWs) between the Orion box and the target server.  I've verified that all is well per the PDF at SolarWinds Knowledge Base :: Troubleshooting Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI).  I've successfully tested remote WMI connections using wbemtest from the Orion server to the target server.

I've done all of the above with multiple servers/services/credentials (even using my personal account which I *know* has permissions) and always get the same result - continued "Initial Poll in progress" and no status update for several days.

Any suggested next steps in troubleshooting?  Where can I see the logs showing NPM attempting to poll the service status on the target server?

TIA
